How will renewable energy benefit communities?

Local communities are the lifeblood of the Highlands and Islands. None more so than in the many rural areas that possess the best natural renewable energy resources.

Distinct cultural identity and a strong sense of community are the social glue that holds many relatively sparsely-populated areas together.

It is this bond that provides the impetus to ensure communities across the Highlands and Islands enjoy the benefits of renewable energy.

Community Energy Scotland (CES) - formerly known as HICEC - has been established to support communities develop their own renewable energy schemes. That support includes practical, hands-on support and advice, grant, loan and equity investment in projects.

CES delivers the Scottish Government's Community and Renewable Energy Scheme across Scotland, while HIE contracts with CES to support larger-scale community projects of 1MW or more in the Highlands and Islands.

CES has already supported the development of Gigha's 'Dancing Ladies' - three Vestas 225kw turbines - which are already earning the community an annual net income of £80,000.
