Activity The PURE Energy Centre Ltd. was established on the back of the PURE Project which in 2005, delivered a zero emissions, off-grid renewable hydrogen hybrid power supply to an industrial estate on the most northerly island in the UK. The PURE Energy Centre premises incorporate high and low cost stored energy (hydrogen and thermal) as well as providing a fuelling station for the UK’s only road licensed renewable H2 fuel cell car. The PURE Energy Centre aims to make renewable hydrogen solutions accessible to communities worldwide by offering a range of support services and commercial products, including specialist residential training courses, an R&D facility, consultancy and advisory services and hydrogen/oxygen production units (“hypods”) which can accommodate any renewable energy input, and deliver a hydrogen output. The PURE Energy Centre is affiliated to Robert Gordons University and the University of the Highlands & Islands, and have acted as advisers to Highlands & Islands Enterprise, the Scottish Executive and Westminster on hydrogen and fuel cell development policies. The 3 founding Directors of the PURE Energy Centre, Dr. Daniel Aklil (MIEE, PhD, MEng, BSc, HND), Ross Gazey (MPhil, BEng Hons), Sandy Macaulay (MSc, BA Hons) combine an impressive set of skills encompassing academic research, technical innovation, practical engineering, community development and a wealth of commercial experience throughout the world. They have all been described by international hydrogen industry experts as being pioneers in ground-breaking hydrogen technology . Since its establishment in 2006, the PURE Energy Centre has been involved in off-grid energy projects and renewable hydrogen developments in 4 continents, has delivered specialist training in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies to over 100 students, and has hosted visits, conducted workshops and delivered presentations to businesses, politicians of all parties, investors, engineers, school students, academic researchers, and public agencies. Many of the key customers of the PURE Energy Centre are grid constrained or off-grid communities seeking a renewable energy solution to local energy insecurity. This reflects the heritage and foundation of the PURE Energy Centre as a community development initiative established around an operating renewable energy system which incorporates innovative energy storage, energy efficiency, effective heat management and alternative transport fuels. The PURE Energy Centre Ltd. currently has a workforce of 7 based in Shetland, and has already established two private spin-out companies to commercialise hydrogen applications. The intellectual assets of the PURE Energy Centre have been formally valued at over £300,000. The PURE Energy TM Systems, products and operational experience, provide a unique contribution to the development of a future energy economy in which renewable energy and hydrogen play key roles. Examples of such unique products are the PURE Fuel Cell Car (the only road licensed hydrogen car in the UK), the PURE System (the only off-grid, community-owned renewable hydrogen system in the world), the PURE Hydrogen Training Centre (the only dedicated renewable hydrogen training facility in Europe), and the PURE R&D facility which is the only high wind-speed test centre for small wind turbines in the UK, and the only test centre for hydrogen applications which uses high quality renewable hydrogen.
